It Does Take a Village to Raise and Protect a Child

In many African communities, each and every newborn is seen as a blessing for the entire community, and their philosophy is one of total commitment to the care of their children - scarcity of basic nutritional and medical resources notwithstanding. Three often-cited African proverbs, "a child does not grow up in a single home," "regardless of a child's biological parent(s) its upbringing belongs to the community," and "it takes a village to raise a child,” reflect this philosophy.

Children’s Advocacy Centers of Georgia Supports HB 200

Children's Advocacy Centers of Georgia and our 40 member centers will always advocate for and support legislation that seeks to protect children from sexual abuse and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). The laws and procedures that are put into place must be effective yet child friendly. HB 200 seeks to makes changes to Georgia's current Human Trafficking Law by recognizing that victims of forced sexual servitude should not be treated as criminals and provides an affirmative defense to victims for sexual crimes.

Weathering the Storm

Children’s Advocacy Centers in the state of Georgia are currently facing serious financial challenges. This is the same scenario faced throughout the nation by state and local governments, companies and non-profit organizations. Although state revenue has risen, foundation and individual donations have not. These conditions are forcing boards to realistically examine the financial situation of their children’s advocacy centers (CAC) and make tough decisions on how they will continue to operate.

Become a Supporter and Believer of Children’s Advocacy Centers

As my time with CACGA comes to a close, I’d like to share with you why I believe in what we do. In 1995, I was abducted from my home in Norcross, raped and left in a crime-ridden area of Atlanta. After I was taken to the Atlanta Police Department, I was accused of a “sex for drugs deal” gone bad. Then, I was taken to Grady’s Emergency Room. I got there around midnight in the same clothes I wore during the attack. A nurse said she would contact the Rape Crisis Center and that a doctor would see me soon.

What are Children’s Advocacy Centers?

Children’s Advocacy Centers have received high praise and many accolades for our work in child abuse evaluation and the appropriate clinical and legal actions. However, we as an organization may be one of the best kept secrets in the state of Georgia. Many of us regularly come into contact with persons who are educators, daycare workers, medical professionals who work with children on a daily basis and still ask the question, “What are Children’s Advocacy Centers?”
